The story behind Unstuck
This tool started in a coaching session, with a handful of questions that helped me when I felt stuck.
It started in a coaching session
I'm Clarice, and I built Unstuck. I'm being coached by Jo Perold, and in one of our sessions Jo introduced me to a framework for working through the feeling of being stuck.
Instead of asking me to fix the problem, it asked where I would escape to if I could. Then it asked what that escape was really pointing at. The daydream turned out to be less about running away and more about something I needed.
Making it my own
I kept coming back to the framework after that session, and over time I customised it to suit my needs. What I ended up with is the five questions you'll find here:
- If there was an out, what would it be?
- What is the universal yearning behind it?
- What are all the ways you could meet that desire?
- What is holding you back from getting them?
- What small steps will you take?
The version in Unstuck is my adaptation, so anything that feels clumsy in it is mine, not Jo's.
Why I'm sharing it
I turned it into a tool so I could come back to the questions whenever I needed them. Then it seemed a waste to keep it to myself. Feeling stuck is common, and not everyone has a coach to ask them the right question at the right moment.
Unstuck isn't a replacement for coaching, and it isn't therapy or medical advice. It's a quiet place to think something through, one question at a time. If you feel stuck, I hope it helps you the way it helped me.
Thank you, Jo
None of this would exist without Jo Perold's coaching. If you're looking for a coach, you can find Jo on LinkedIn.
